about

"Sister" is a single created in collaboration with my friend and soul sister Tabitha Joi. It's a song of hope and strength written in response to the struggle and fear we've all experienced in a society that continually disempowers women, especially low-income women, migrant women, trans women, disabled women and women of color.

For me, this year is about fiercely loving and protecting what's ours. Our family, our friends, our communities, our planet, and our values. I wrote this song in solidarity with all female-identified folks (and their allies) because we often experience so much alienation - both from society and from each other. We are expected to tear each other down and fight to prove our value against that of our peers. What if instead, we walked with bravery together? What if we made sisterhood the foundation of our collective confidence and growth?

What 2016 taught me is that we've got to have each other's backs. Sometimes all it takes is reaching out and telling someone that you see them, or that you feel what they're going through. The rest is staying up, staying positive and taking action together. For all of you out there who are activists, or planning to get more involved in activism this year, this song is for you... keep on trucking. I got you and we got each other.

This song is my gift to the community for free, though you may donate if you like. It is licensed on Creative Commons and may be used with proper accreditation (please see below). Donations will go directly toward future recording projects dedicated to the community and empowerment of oppressed groups.

lyrics

Sister
You've got so much on your shoulders
Trying to prove your worth by being perfect in every way
Well that won't make you bolder

I know you've been hurting
And I feel all your pain
Just know that your beauty and mine
Are one and the same

(Chorus)
You've got to stand tall and shine your light
Your grace and your power your wisdom and truth
'Cause full force it burns so bright
In all of the world there is no one like you
And nobody can take away
The beauty you possess
Come take my hand
Together we'll stand
Put the war to rest

Sister
Why do we threaten one another
Living to be any woman but yourself will make you tired
And won't place you above her

I know you've been feeling
Not good enough
Just know that you're healing
Anytime you share your love

(Chorus)
You've got to stand tall and shine your light
Your grace and your power your wisdom and truth
'Cause full force it burns so bright
In all of the world there is no one like you
And nobody can take away
The beauty you possess
Come take my hand
Together we'll stand
Put the war to rest

All the shame and blame and jealousy
Is how the world tries to keep us down
So we raise up our voices in harmony
'Cause we can all share the crown
Side by side will you walk with me
Bold, unafraid and proud
Sister believe it!
The time is now

(Chorus)
You've got to stand tall and shine your light
Your grace and your power your wisdom and truth
'Cause full force it burns so bright
In all of the world there is no one like you
And nobody can take away
The beauty you possess
Come take my hand
Together we'll stand
Put the war to rest

Come take my hand
Together we'll stand
Put the war to rest

Come take my hand
Together we'll stand
Put the war to rest
